About the Artist

Hello! My name is Jannell, and as of August 2024, I am an Animation and Visual Effects graduate from Austin Peay State University (APSU), where I have spent four and a half years cultivating my passion for the arts. Being a Hispanic artist of Puerto Rican and Colombian descent, my cultural heritage influences my creativity and storytelling, allowing me to bring diverse perspectives to my work in character design and concept art while encouraging me to keep other cultural histories in mind as a fellow minority. As a horror enthusiast, I love to draw inspiration from the macabre, exploring the depths of the human psyche to create captivating characters and scenes. During my time at APSU, I worked on several notable projects, including "NightCrawling," a short animated film that received recognition by being included in Toon Boom's 2024 Educational Reel, and a soon-to-be animated series called "Ghoul Sitters," where I collaborated with Boom! Animation during a remote summer internship. In this project, I developed a storyboard with the co-CEO that featured original character designs and animations.I like to define myself as an animation generalist, with experience beginning from 2D and 3D animation to illustration and visual effects. I favor 2D projects for their unique visual charm and how they can stylishly convey emotion and character in a hand-drawn format. A favorite but personal example are works like "Tom and Jerry" and movies like "The Prince of Egypt." Despite this preference, I enjoy switching and learning between the two art worlds as both forms of animation are influential for the audiences they reach. My interest in creature and character design has expanded to include 2D and 3D rigging, animation, and visual/narrative development for films, shows, and games. My future goals are to refine my artistic skills through hands-on experience and contribute to the next iconic monster for a future horror movie or game series. Outside of the industry, I aspire to deepen my relationship with art and forge a promising future despite any pessimistic thoughts that say otherwise.
